Join the Ohio Justice & Policy Center on the evening of November 18, 2020 at 7 pm Eastern time for a timely discussion on race and justice with Dr. Yusef Salaam. Dr. Salaam is an award winning motivational and transformational speaker, activist, father, writer, poet and author of Words of a Man, my right to be, and co-author of Punching the Air. He is also one of the Exonerated Five, formerly known as the Central Park Five.
On April 19, 1989, a young woman was brutally raped and left for dead in one of New York City's most iconic spaces, Central Park. Five teens from Harlem, four Black and one Latino, were tried and convicted of the crime in one of the most frenzied cases in the city's history. The accused teens became known collectively as the "Central Park Five."
One of the boys, Yusef Salaam, was just 15 years-old when his life was upended and changed forever. In 2002, after they had spent between seven and 13 years of their lives behind bars, the sentences of the boys - now men - were overturned through DNA testing.
Their story was the subject of an award-winning Ken Burns documentary and Ava DuVernay's wildly popular Netflix limited series, "When They See Us."
For everyone's safety, this event will take place online only this year.
We have tried to keep the ticket price low to make this an affordable and well-attended event. Because the money raised helps fund OJPC's work, if you are able to, we hope you will consider purchasing a Supporter Level ticket. And thank you for your generosity!
